Legislation Allows In-State Tuition for Out-of-State Residents When Tuition is Paid by NC Employer

For college credit courses, out-of-state tuition rates apply. However, out-of-state students may qualify for in-state tuition rates if their North Carolina employer provides a company check or official authorization to bill the employer for the entire in-state tuition balance. Verification on official company letterhead is required to confirm employment status when paying by company check.

According to North Carolina General Statute 1150-39 if an out-of-state resident is employed by a North Carolina industry or business and wishes to enroll at Surry Community College, he or she may qualify for in-state tuition rates. In order to qualify for the in-state tuition rates, the North Carolina employer will be required to pay the entire tuition balance by a company check or Surry Community College can bill the industry or business for the entire tuition balance. This means that if your employer pays the tuition by company check or if Surry Community College bills your employer, you can enroll at Surry Community College and receive the in-state tuition rate. Note that money orders are not permitted. In order for out-of-state students to qualify for the in-state tuition rates, Surry Community College must have either a company check made out to Surry Community College or an official authorization from the employer giving us permission to bill them for the entire in-state tuition balance. If paying by a company check, you must have a letter on official company letterhead stating that you are an employee for that industry or business. This letter stands good from the fall semester until the next fall semester. A representative from the Business Office at Surry Community College will call to verify employment as stated on the official company letterhead or the official authorization.

Please know that this process must be completed by registration day of each semester. For questions contact, the SCC Business Office (336) 386-3206.
