Surry Community College is excited to offer a new and innovative program this summer for anyone looking to enhance their skills and prepare for careers in the Construction and Engineering Technology fields.
This course introduces fundamental employment core skillsets required to effectively enter the construction or engineering technology workforce and/or a registered apprenticeship and may also serve as a component of a pre-apprenticeship. Upon completion, students should be able to explain how to locate and engage employers, present themselves in a professional manner, perform basic on-the-job skills, pursue necessary job-specific training and/or certification, and enter a construction or engineering technology career with the knowledge required to be successfully employed.

Understand the need for respect and diversity in the workplace. Take the DiSC Behavior Assessment to help each of us understand the reasons behind our own behavior and of others. Learn why we need teammates that are not like us and how we work together to make our business successful.
Earn a General Industry Safety and Health credential by completing the 10-hour Occupational Safety & Health Administration course. OSHA-10 Safety training is an industry recognized credential that is valuable in the workforce.
Learn the importance of personal health and fitness including taking an online personal health assessment. Create and plan for your personal health and mental wellbeing and talk about stresses and how to deal with it in a healthy way.
Identify various careers, skills, and education requirements needed in different construction occupations. Complete a career inventory assessment and discuss professional licensures and industry certifications in occupations.
Investigate the knowledge, skills, and abilities for a particular job. Develop a professional resume, complete mock job applications, and discuss how to prepare for a successful job interview.
Visit businesses and industries in Surry and Yadkin county before entering the education and training required. Learn the importance of making a good first impression during a job interview and understand that you need to know about the employer/business. Identify, schedule, and visit local employers in the construction and architecture industries. Learn about these local businesses and use the information to help apply for positions in the future.
