Yohana Nava of Surry Community College’s PTK Honor Society Elected Vice-President for Region

Yohana Nava, a Surry Community College student and member of the college's Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, was recently elected as the Carolinas Region Vice President for North Carolina for the 2019-2020 academic year. PTK's Faculty Advisor Dr. Kathleen Fowler says this is the first time a SCC student has held this position.

Nava, of Elkin, is currently working towards earning an Associate in Science degree from Surry Community College and hopes to become a doctor. She stated in her election profile that she wants “to expand PTK by increasing student awareness and by encouraging more students to join and get involved. ”

The election was held at the Carolinas Regional Convention in Columbia, S.C., on Sunday, March 3.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Miss., is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,300 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, Peru, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates and U.S. territorial possessions. More than 3 million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 130,000 students inducted annually.
