Two SCC Students Receive Scholarships to NC State
Two Surry Community College students are receiving Goodnight Scholarships from North Carolina State University. These students are Andrew Fletcher of Mount Airy and Ethan Manning of Pilot Mountain. Both transferred to NCSU in August.
Andrew Fletcher graduated with an Associate in Arts and Associate in Science from Surry Community College where he served as president and dedicated member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. He was also involved as a tutor and participated in the Math Club. Fletcher has experience in hands-on STEM activities and has engaged in volunteering activities throughout the community. He plans to major in Aerospace Engineering.
Ethan Manning graduated with an Associate of Science, an Associate of Arts, an Associate of General Education, and a certificate in Computer Programming and Development from Surry Community College, where he was a mathematics tutor for the Academic Support Center. Manning also served as an IT intern at Altec through Surry-Yadkin Works and was a volunteer for Blue’s Whiskers Lodge, an animal adoption clinic in Mount Airy, where he accrued over 250 volunteer hours.
Of the 160 Goodnight recipients, 100 were chosen for the class of 2030 and 60 were chosen for the transfer class of 2029. The 100 students entering into the class of 2030 hail from 47 counties across the state of North Carolina. The 60 students joining the transfer class of 2029 come from 22 counties.
Recipients participated in a thorough selection process over the spring semester, which included an application and interview with NC State faculty, staff, alumni, and industry representatives from SAS Institute and the Kenan Fellows Program.
The Goodnight Scholarship is valued at $25,000 per year for up to four years for traditional students and three years for transfer students. Both cohorts receive access to a comprehensive student development program that includes weekly programming, exclusive travel opportunities, and enrichment grant funding.
The Goodnight Scholars Program was established in 2008 by NC State alumni Dr. Jim Goodnight '65 and Mrs. Ann Goodnight '68 with the goal of providing financial assistance to North Carolina students from low- and middle-income families who wish to pursue STEM or STEM education at NC State. In 2017, the scholarship expanded to include transfer students from North Carolina community colleges who planned to enroll at NC State in the fall after receiving an associate degree. Now, the Goodnight Scholars Program is the largest full-tuition scholarship program at NC State with 255 undergraduate students enrolled per year.
