Tish King – Employee & Alumni Spotlight

Date:

Surry Community College alumni, and now full-time employee, Letitia “Tish” King of Elkin says her work is meaningful at SCC as a Student Success Advisor helping students. She has worked as a Success Advisor since Oct. 1, 2019.

“I have always had a passion for helping others and to be able to assist students while they work towards achieving their goals and dreams is very rewarding for me,” she said.

Previously, she worked part-time as an Administrative Assistant for SCC’s Student Services, a role she fulfilled from July 2018 to September 2019. From October 2014 to June 2018, she was a Finance & Insurance Administrator for Capital Ford of Charlotte.

King graduated from Elkin High School in 2008. She completed an Associate in Arts degree from Surry Community College in Early Childhood Education in 2011. She then earned a Bachelor of Arts at Appalachian State University in Child Development with a minor in Nutrition in 2013.

“I recommend Surry Community College because as a former student, I can truly say that I gained exceptional knowledge that prepared me for the workforce. If not for SCC, I would not be where I am today. The faculty and staff have always been so encouraging and supportive to help make sure that all students succeed in their own ways,” King said.

King says everyone, especially her student advisees, should know that the secret of getting ahead is simply getting started.

“We all have to start somewhere. SCC is the perfect place to begin your educational career,” she said.

King is happily married to husband Chris. They recently had their first child Casen in May 2019.

“He is our world and we are so thankful for him,” she said. “I also have two dogs, Macy and Miley. Macy is my snuggle bug, while Miley is always ready for a game of fetch. Life can be a little crazy with Casen and our fur babies, but we love it!”

– Fun Facts about Tish King –

Mentor:

I look up to my grandfather a lot. He has always been the backbone of our family and works so hard to make sure that his family has what they need. He demonstrates strength in so many aspects, and so often I feel that he has more confidence in me than I do in myself. I always go to him when I need advice, and he has always had the words that I needed to hear.

Favorite Authors:

My two favorite authors are Nicholas Sparks and Harlen Coben. I read my first Harlen Coben novel, Promise Me, while taking a course here at SCC, and I have been a fan of his books ever since.

The beach – I love to be with my family at the beach. The sound of the waves crashing and the breeze blowing is so relaxing for me.

Musical Interests:

90s and 2000s

Fun Trips:

My two favorite trips were: First, California (Huntington Beach, Santa Monica, Los Angeles, Hollywood, Laguna Beach, San Diego). It was a super cool trip. Second, Hope Town, Bahamas. Hope Town can only be accessed by boat; therefore, it is a very small town where there are very few cars. Golf carts are the main source of transportation. This made it a very relaxing vacation with beautiful beaches to snorkel.
