Surry-Yadkin Works Pre-Apprentice Selected as ApprenticeshipNC’s Outstanding Pre-Apprentice of the Year

Date:

Madison Jones, North Surry High School senior, has been selected as the Outstanding Pre-Apprentice of the year for ApprenticeshipNC.

Jones is completing her pre-apprenticeship with Surry-Yadkin Works as a welding pre-apprentice at Smith-Rowe, LLC, a North Carolina based company that performs work on bridges, roadways, and more.

Jones said, “I chose welding because you don’t see women in this type of workforce, and it’s something that I can sit there, on my own, and focus on. I was inspired by watching my mentors take old, worn-out things and restore them with a little work and make them look like new. They train me to do these things, make my job easier, and also give me tips and tricks on how to utilize my resources.”

Jody Phillips, Vice President of Smith-Rowe, LLC, said, “Madison Jones came to us with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn, and I think that’s what really set her apart from the other folks. She is a really talented individual, and she has a great future ahead of her.”

Jones was selected as the Outstanding Pre-Apprentice of the Year for demonstrating a commitment to learning her trade, exhibiting leadership qualities and a willingness to learn, demonstrating dependability and a team player attitude, showing an inspiration from new knowledge of her trade, and providing a cost savings to her employer.

Jones commented on being notified about her recognition as the Outstanding Pre-Apprentice of the year.

“I found out through a text message from my advisor, Crystal. She had let me know that I had won state, and that this was something to be excited about,” Jones said. “I was surprised because I didn’t know anything about it, and I was happy because I’ve never won something like this before, especially state.”

“Madison Jones is a great example of what a pre-apprentice should be like. She works hard, and she has an amazing work ethic. Madison has had this opportunity at Smith-Rowe to try out Smith-Rowe. Smith-Rowe has tried out Madison, and they’ve realized that it’s a good fit,” said Crystal Folger-Hawks, Executive Director of Surry-Yadkin Works and Jones’ Surry-Yadkin Works Advisor.
