Members of Surry Community College's Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society recently attended Carolinas Regional Convention where they received 18 awards and recognitions including: Distinguished Honors in Action Project, Theme 7: Powers of Connection; Distinguished Honors in Action Project; Distinguished College Project; Distinguished Chapter; Most Distinguished Chapter, Third Finalist; and Outstanding Participation in the Carolinas Region Honors in Action Project, as well as attaining the rank of Five-Star Chapter.
“Several of these awards came with a cash prize that can be used to register students for Regional PTK events in the upcoming year, ” explains Dr. Kathleen Fowler, SCC English Instructor and Faculty Co-advisor for PTK.
Other awards were for individuals including: Distinguished Chapter Officer Honorable Mention, Heather Ford of Pinnacle; Distinguished Chapter Officer Honorable Mention, Abbi Freeman of Mount Airy; Distinguished Chapter Member Honorable Mention, Sarah Orange of Mount Airy. Ford, Freeman, and Orange also won Carolinas Region Hall of Honor awards.In addition, Ford and Fowler also wonCarolinas Region Five Star Competitive Edge awards.
Co-advisor, Dr. Kathleen Fowler won the Paragon Award for New Advisors Honorable Mention and the Phi Theta Kappa Carolinas Region Horizon Award. She also received the Carolinas Region Five Star Advisor award.
Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Miss., is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,300 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, Peru, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates and U.S. territorial possessions. More than 3 million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 130,000 students inducted annually.
