Surry Community College is offering multiple classes focused on learning to play a musical instrument starting in August at The Elkin Center, 1461 N. Bridge St., Elkin.
Learn to play Appalachian music with beginner instruction in guitar, mandolin, and bass in an open jam setting in Surry’s String Band Class offered each Tuesday, Aug. 15 through Oct. 3 from 4 to 6 p.m. No playing experience is necessary in this beginner class. Students will learn basic chords and strumming patterns and will be able to back up fiddle tunes and vocal songs upon completion of the course. Students need to bring a working instrument, preferably with new strings, picks and a tuner. Pre-registration and pre-payment of $80 are required.
SCC is also offering a Beginner Mandolin class on Tuesdays, Aug. 15 through Oct. 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. Students will learn the basic mandolin chords and strumming patterns as well as learn how to play lead melodies by ear. By the end of the course, each student should have the skills to play basic Old Time, Celtic, and Bluegrass tunes and continue playing on their own with others in a jam setting. Students will need their own working mandolins, picks and a tuner. Pre-registration and pre-payment of $80 are required.
Caroline Beverley will instruct both classes. Beverley is a local musician and vocalist with a passion for introducing others to the joys of Old Time and Traditional music through lessons and performances. Not only has Beverley taught music lessons at Surry for several years, she also serves as one of SCC’s Old Time and Traditional Music Camp instructors.
