Posted: Apr 13, 2018
Surry Community College will offer a new Civics class this summer to help students understand how government works.
Civics for Adults: Your Government and How It Works will meet on Thursdays from April 19 to June 21 from 6:30-8 p.m. at The Pilot Center, 612. E. Main St., Pilot Mountain in Room 110.
Information taught will include a basic review of all three levels of government – local (city and county), state (North Carolina), and federal. The course will use current events to show how knowledge of government is directly related to today.
Instructional methods will include lectures, guest speakers, group discussions, suggested readings, video clips, and more. The class will begin with an explanation of the local county and city governments of North Carolina. Current events will lead the class into different areas weekly.
The instructor, David Diamont, has more than 40 years of experience teaching History and Civics in the Surry County and Mount Airy City schools. He served in the North Carolina House of Representatives for 20 years. The course is $40, and pre-registration is required.
