Surry CC Art Students Showcase Unique Work
Posted: Jul 07, 2017
While Surry Community College’s artwork is always showcased twice a year during a fall and spring art show, SCC Students DeDe Brown, Brianna Speight, and Brooke Peak, all of Mount Airy, chose to display a unique artwork outside for the enjoyment of the entire SCC community as they strolled through the Dobson campus.
While the trio of students were enrolled in ART 122: 3D Design, they constructed an elaborate crocheted acrylic and cotton yarn piece to hang outside of the J-Building on campus. The piece entitled Transforming the Traditional was meant to instill an appreciation for art and provoke thoughtful conversation amongst Surry students, faculty, and staff, as well as any community members passing through.
Surry offers many Fine Arts courses each semester, and offers the option of obtaining an Associate in Fine Arts (AFA) in Visual Arts degree for those interested in pursuing artistic programs at a higher educational level. The Fine Arts degree provides graduates with a solid foundation for artistic growth in visual design. Students enrolled in Surry’s AFA program learn to problem solve and brainstorm as they create visual design projects and communicate ideas with a wide variety of media. Collaborative efforts with skilled artists and individual work produced in well-equipped art studios help Surry students gain the artistic confidence and technical mastery necessary to build their portfolios and continue their art education in competitive programs. Coursework includes a variety of media exploration in both two- and three-dimensional forms.
Registration is currently open for Fall 2017 classes. Students must register before Aug. 1; these classes will start Aug. 15. For additional information contact Student Services at (336) 386-3264.
