Surry Botany Students Turn Local Park into Learning Experience

Pilot Mountain State Park is home to over 70 families of vascular plants making it an ideal destination for a plant identification lab for Surry Community College’s BIO 120: Introductory Botany class taught by Instructor Jeff Jones.
Students who participated in the identification lab are Rebecca Browder of Westfield, DeDe Brown of Mount Airy, Jessica Edwards of Mount Airy, George Hailey of Pilot Mountain, Eden Hamby of Purlear, Jade Hazelwood of Mount Airy, Nate McCarthy of Mount Airy, and Katie Williams of Mount Airy.
Those enrolled in the BIO 120 class have taken trips to several other local places during the semester including Mitchell River, Fisher River Park, Yadkin Island Park, and Grayson Highlands State Park in Virginia as field studies for the course.
Jones explained the benefit of teaching in an area so rich in natural areas by saying, “These trips present a great opportunity for the students to become more familiar with our native flora and to get experience making observations in the natural world. They begin to recognize characteristics to look for in certain plants for identification and to associate certain plants with certain habitats. The diversity of our native plants is on display. It is absolutely wonderful to have a multitude of natural resources conveniently nearby.”
Surry offers an Associate in Science degree designed for students interested in transferring to a four-year institution and majoring in a STEM subject – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, including science and math education. Students who obtain an Associate of Science degree at SCC will be eligible to transfer to all constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina with junior status upon admission into the institution.
Registration is currently open for Summer and Fall 2017 classes. Summer classes begin May 22 and June 27. Students must register for fall classes before Aug. 1. Those classes start Aug. 15. Contact Student Services at (336) 386-3264 for additional information.
