During the Spring 2017 semester at Surry Community College, things came full circle for alum Andrea Contreras as she returned to a Surry classroom.
Contreras recently visited Spanish Instructor Jennifer Jimenez’s class to share her experience working as an Interpreter and Translator at Surry-Yadkin Electric Membership Corporation and provide students with an example of a local career using skills and knowledge gained during her time as a Surry student. Contreras graduated from SCC in 2012 with a Community Spanish Interpreter Certificate.
Students gained valuable insight from interacting with Contreras. Those who attended the class are Saira Arreola of Mount Airy, Alondra Carrasco of Mount Airy, Carmen Contreras of Pilot Mountain, Elizabeth Hernandez of Dobson, Maria Leyva of Mount Airy, Katia Martinez of Dobson, German Munoz of Mount Airy, Laura Olvera of Mount Airy, Jessica Ramirez of Mount Airy, Giselle Reyes of Mount Airy, Aaron Sigmon of Mount Airy, and Evelin Villasenor of Dobson.
Surry offers a Community Spanish Interpreter Certificate designed for students with a native-like fluency in both English and Spanish who plan to enter workplaces with multicultural clientele. Coursework in the certificate program allows students to learn translation and interpretation skills through roleplay, and ethical and cultural case studies. Students are given many opportunities to speak with interpreters in varies fields, like Contreras, to gain a greater understanding of what a job as an Interpreter entails. The average annual salary for a Spanish Interpreter is currently approximately $42,420.
Graduating with the Community Spanish Interpreter Certificate often enhances a student’s job prospects in fields such as the medical, legal, religious, educational, and business sectors. As a result, Surry students are often encouraged to pair the Interpreter Certificate with other degree offering tracks including Accounting, Business Administration, Early Childhood Education, Medical Assisting, Office Administration, and Nursing among others.
