SECU Foundation Awards Scholarships to Two Students

The State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) Foundation recently awarded scholarships to two Surry Community College students, Jenna Simpson of Dobson and Kain Kiser of Pilot Mountain.

Simpson and Kiser were both awarded a two-year scholarship for $5,000. The presentation was made at the college’s September Board of Trustees meeting. Each community college can choose up to two recipients.

Simpson is the daughter of Michael and Melissa Simpson and is a 2019 graduate of Surry Central High School. Her academic achievements include the National Honors Society, the National Technical Honors Society and the English National Honors Society. At SCC, Simpson has served as a member of the Interact Club, HOSA (Future Health Professionals, formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America), Young Life and the Student Government Association as the volleyball representative. Her athletic abilities earned her the All-Conference Award for varsity volleyball, participation on the All-Tournament team and a volleyball scholarship to SCC. Sheis an Associate in Science candidate and plans to transfer to UNC-Charlotte to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Upon completion of her degree, she hopes to pursue a career as a labor and delivery nurse.

Kiser is the son of Karla and Mike Kiser, and is a 2018 graduate of East Surry High School. He is currently playing baseball for SCC and hopes to continue playing when he transfers to a four-year university. Kiser possesses a strong drive to do well in school while serving as a positive example as a SCC student and athlete. He is known for being self-driven, focused and compassionate in everything he does. He is pursuing an Associate in Arts degree with plans to transfer and major in sports management and minor in entrepreneurship.

The two SECU employees making the presentation were Chris King, Vice President State Employees’ Credit Union and Jan Varney, SECU Advisory Board Member. Kendra Myers, SCC Financial Aid Specialist, also assisted with the presentation.
