Six Surry Community College Scholars of Global Distinction were honored at a special graduation ceremony where each received a UNC World View certificate as well as a certificate from Surry Community College.
Each student will also receive a notation on their transcript as graduating with Global Distinction.
“Their accomplishment will be one that stays with them based on the global competence and awareness they have gained, but also on their transcript, ” says Sarah Wright, Faculty Advisor for the Scholars of Global Distinction.
The graduates include: Luis Villicana, Teresa Vazquez, and Joana Hernandez of Dobson; Cameron Taylor and James Slattery of Mount Airy; and Dulce Rodriguez of State Road.
The ceremony was attended by more than 50 SCC faculty, staff, students, and parents along with Surry County Schools representatives. Hazael Andrew, Associate Director of UNC's World View was on hand to present the certificates. Teresa Vasquez, a graduating Scholar of Global Distinction, who will be attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the fall, provided remarks for the graduating scholars. Anayeli Garcia and John Billos, returning Global Scholars, provided remarks about their appreciation for the program and the hope they have for the future.
The Scholars of Global Distinction is a program open to all students at Surry Community College; the program began Fall 2018. The scholars complete 15 credits of globally intensive courses, attend eight “passport ” events, complete an immersion program, and deliver a capstone presentation. Participation in the program fosters increased global awareness and skills to compete in the globally diverse world.
“We graduated six students and have 65 enrolled in the first year, making us one of the newest, but most successful programs in the state, ” Wright stated.
There are 19 community colleges participating in the Global Distinction Program through UNC's World View, which is a non-profit, university-sponsored program that “equips K-12 and community college educators with global knowledge, best practices and resources to prepare students to engage in our interconnected and diverse world. ”
