Surry Community College's Director of Advising and Student Success, Melissa Recknor, has been awarded a scholarship to attend the Kellogg Institute at Appalachian State University in July. Recknor previously held the position of Early College Liaison at Surry.
Recknor will study several topics this summer including integration of student support services, working with diverse student populations, and technology in the 21stcentury classroom. The summer residency program provides a dynamic living-learning community with opportunities for sharing ideas and experiences. Networking among professionals representing a variety of backgrounds from across the United States is a key benefit.
“I am excited to spend two weeks on the ASU campus and honored to have been chosen to attend, ” says Recknor. “Dr. Jami Woods, Vice President of Academic Affairs, and Sabrina Terry, Dean of Student Services, have been wonderfully supportive and flexible to allow me to attend during the busiest time of the year. I am prepared to bring back a wealth of knowledge, skills, and information to share with SCC. ”
Wes Anthony, Director of the Kellogg Institute stated, “We, at the Kellogg Institute, are happy to be able to support Melissa's professional development through awarding her this Director's Scholarship. ”
The Kellogg Institute is designed to further educators' knowledge in the theory and best practices of post-secondary developmental education. Seminars combine expert-led presentations with practical applications promoting student persistence and retention.
