SCC Math Program Takes #1 Spot in Statewide Student Success
Surry Community College proudly highlights the continued excellence of its Mathematics and Physics Division. According to statewide performance data indicators for a three-year average, Surry has earned the #1 ranking in North Carolina for student success in all math courses.
Not only does this top statewide ranking reflect exceptional student outcomes, as well as successful progression into advanced courses and career pathways, but it also underscores the ability of SCC’s mathematics faculty in building students’ confidence, skill level, and results.
“SCC’s math faculty is deeply committed to student success,” says Dr. Susan Worth, Division Chair – Mathematics and Physics. “This recognition of these significant results confirms that our support systems, dedicated instruction, and intense focus on real-world application are making a difference for our students.”
SCC’s Mathematics and Physics Division offers a full range of curriculum math and physics courses designed to educate and support students with a variety of educational goals. The curriculum meets the needs of students pursing transfer degrees, technical programs, or workforce credentials. Students who enroll in SCC math courses have clear learning pathways, smaller class sizes, and have access to strong tutoring support. Recent additions to the curriculum include Engineering Statics, Introduction to Engineering, and Engineering Graphics. The division offers courses on a variety of platforms including face-to-face, asynchronous, or synchronous.
SCC also has a chapter of Mu Alpha Theta, a national mathematics honor society club. Participation in the club provides students with opportunities to cultivate an interest in mathematics, develop strong knowledge, and promote the enjoyment of math. Participating members have represented SCC in regional competitions, earning recognition, further demonstrating the quality of SCC’s math instruction.
“All achievements and recognition are a reflection of our students’ hard work, abilities, and determination,” continues Dr. Worth. “Their success, supported by dedicated faculty and engaged learning opportunities, shows what is possible when students are empowered to succeed.”
