SCC Instructors Honored by American Welding Society

Surry Community College Welding Instructors Michael Dixon (right) and David Wall (left) recently received awards from the American Welding Society for their exemplary instructional skills and dedication to the promotion and advancement of welding skills and knowledge.

Two of Surry Community College’s Welding Instructors recently received awards from the American Welding Society (AWS).

Michael Dixon, the Welding Technology Program’s Lead Instructor, was award the Howard E. Adkins Memorial Instructor of the Year District Award for the 2015-2016 school year. Dixon was the award recipient for AWS’s District Four, encompassing AWS sections 087 Carolina, 121 Tidewater, 137 Northeaster Carolina, 140 Charlotte, 151 Triangle, and 179 Southwest Virginia. Dixon was also named the Howard E. Adkins Memorial Instructor of the Year in 2014-2015 for Section 140 which covers the Charlotte region. Dixon was also recently honored by the college with the Dean’s Award for Meritorious Teaching during Surry’s Spring 2017 Faculty/Staff Luncheon.

Welding Instructor David Wall also received honors for the 2015-2016 year. AWS named Wall the Howard E. Atkins Memorial Instructor of the Year for Section 87, which covers several counties in North Carolina and Virginia. Among the community colleges within the region are SCC, Guilford Technical Community College, and Forsyth Technical Community College. The Howard E. Atkins Memorial Instructor of the Year awards are given out to recognize quality instructional performance devoted to the promotion and expansion of welding skills and knowledge.

Surry Welding Technology student Robin Haas enforced the sentiment that both Dixon and Wall are exemplary instructors well deserving of the accolades they received by saying, “The teachers here are really helpful. Everybody is more than happy to help you with any problem you’re having.”

Surry Community College offers a diploma and certificate in Welding Technology and two additional certifications in GMAW (MIG) and SMAW (STICK) Welding for students to choose from. High school juniors and seniors can take Welding classes tuition-free through the Career & College Promise dual enrollment program.

Registration is currently open for Fall 2017 classes. Students must register for fall classes before Aug. 1. Those classes start Aug. 15.
