Sarah Ayers, a Cosmetology Instructor at Surry Community College, was asked to give content review for a textbook used by cosmetology students nationwide.
Ayers provided feedback on “Milady Standard Cosmetology, ” 13th edition as a user of the textbook. The publisher reached out to a few selective cosmetology instructors to guide decisions on improving the books to best meet the students' needs.
Ayers was originally asked to review three chapters; however, the learning designer from Milady contacted her and told her that based on the quality of her content review, they would like her to submit a writing sample and resume to be considered as a contributor for the upcoming 14th edition of “Milady Cosmetology. ”
Ayers says, “I had a meeting with the product manager to discuss revising the anatomy and physiology chapter, and the properties of hair and scalp chapter. He hopes to have all of the contributors in place by the end of April. Work on the revision will begin in May and take about a year. The finished product should be published and available in December 2020. ”
Ayers has worked in the cosmetology field for 20 years and has been an instructor at Surry for 15 years.
“I love seeing students learn and grow, ” says Ayers. “I love being able to share the knowledge and experience that I have with them. It's very humbling to see the sacrifices students make and the obstacles they overcome while enrolled in our program. When I see them succeed, it so rewarding, and I'm grateful that I was a small part of their journey. ”
