SCC Announces 2023-2024 Faculty & Staff Awards

Surry Community College President Dr. David Shockley announced the 2023-2024 Faculty & Staff Awards during the Fall 2023 Faculty/Staff Meeting on August 25.

James Quick, Lead Instructor of Applied Animal Science, received Surry Community College's Excellence in Teaching Award for 2023-2024, the highest faculty award given by SCC.

“James is an outstanding instructor who possesses an eternal optimism for students. He has an inspiring presence, positive outlook, and confidence that uplifts our college,” Shockley said.

Mathematics Instructor Sara McMillen and former Lead Instructor of Languages and Humanities, Sarah Wright, received the President's Award for Meritorious Teaching for 2023-2024.

Cheryl Fielder, Executive Assistant – Office of the President & Board of Trustees, received Surry Community College's Distinguished Staff Award for 2023-2024, the highest staff award given by SCC.

“Cheryl has given Surry Community College her heart and soul throughout 32 years of service. Her passion and devotion for the college’s mission is second to none. She is a consummate ‘cheerleader’ who always seeks to help others achieve their educational goals even during her personal time.”

Alan Unsworth, Dean of Instructional Support, and Briana “Bri” Beasley, Counselor, received the President's Award for Meritorious Service for 2023-2024.

During the meeting, five SCC employees received pins to recognize each employee's 20 years of full-time service. Those veteran employees are Tony Martin, Senior Vice President of Financial Services; Dr. Kathleen Fowler, English Instructor; Margie Collins, Coordinator - Curriculum Programs; Kennette Thomas, English Instructor; and Rachel Hiatt, Coordinator - Work-Based Learning and Apprenticeship Initiatives.
