Chilton started a pre-apprenticeship with Surry-Yadkin Works and Mount Pilot Child Enrichment Center in August 2021, working in the nursery as a teacher assistant. She completed a pre-apprenticeship in May 2022 alongside her graduation from East Surry High School and transitioned to the Apprenticeship program through Surry-Yadkin Works and Surry Community College. As a requirement of the apprenticeship, Chilton completed an Associate in Applied Science in Early Childhood Education degree and graduated from Surry Community College in May 2024. She is continuing her employment with Mount Pilot Child Enrichment Center.

“Maria is the first Early Childhood Educator to complete an apprenticeship through the Surry-Yadkin Works program. Throughout the apprenticeship experience, she excelled at both her on-the-job training and her education. She has demonstrated dedication to her career as an Early Childhood Educator and we are very proud of her,” says Rachel Hiatt, Director of Work-Based Learning and Apprenticeships at Surry Community College.
