SBC Director Mark Harden Named Rookie of the Year

Director of Surry Community College’s Small Business Center (SBC), Mark Harden, has been named the North Carolina State Small Business Center’s Rookie of the Year.

Hardin has made significant contributions to the community during his two-year tenure as the director of SCC’s Small Business Center.

Harden has counseled hundreds of aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners while actively supporting small business start-ups resulting in nearly a hundred new and retained jobs in the region. Additionally, the SCC SBC has offered dozens of business seminars with nearly a thousand attendees in the region during his tenure.

The counseling and seminars cover a diverse range of important topics including business plans, capital funding, e-commerce, marketing, accounting, QuickBooks, income taxes, sales taxes, licenses/permits, website design and much more. The SCC SBC hosted a non-profit two-day workshop covering a multitude of critical topics important to all non-profit organizations in the region.

Harden has served local communities by collaborating with them in support of the “Shop Local” campaign by AMEX and serving on many economic development and workforce training committees throughout the region. He participates in Leadership Surry County and Leadership Yadkin County.

Additionally, he is a special speaker within the college offering entrepreneurship advice and direction to cosmetology students, business students, automotive students and others. He speaks to a wide range of local organizations such as Rotary clubs, other civic clubs, as well as special audiences like the local Bee Keepers Association and high school students participating in business initiatives.

He is truly an advocate, promoter and educator with a focus on creating and maintaining a healthy and prosperous business environment in our communities, according to a news release from the North Carolina State Small Business Center Network.
