Nine Graduate from Surry’s Medical Assisting Program

Nine students recently graduated from Surry Community College with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Medical Assisting.
The graduates are Lisa Casstevens of State Road, Nora Cristobal of Dobson, Angela Garcia of Pinnacle, Brandi Hudson of Mt. Pleasant, Jenny Lor of Mount Airy, Olivia Petras of Ennice, Brittany Snow of Mount Airy, Leslie Speer of Dobson, and Kaitlin Thompson of East Bend.
Surry’s Medical Assisting curriculum prepares multi-skilled health care professionals qualified to perform administrative, clinical and laboratory procedures. Coursework includes instruction in scheduling appointments, assisting with examinations and treatments, performing routine laboratory procedures, electrocardiography, supervised medication administration, and ethical and legal issues associated with patient care. Students are required to complete interesting courses including Medical Terminology I and II, Symptomatology, Drug Therapy, and General or Interpersonal Psychology.
Medical Assistants make on average over $29,000 per year. Employment opportunities include physicians’ offices, health maintenance organizations, health departments, and hospitals.
