Melissa Recknor – Employee Spotlight

Melissa Recknor is Surry Community College’s Director of Advising and Student Success, leading a team of success advisors and one counselor in Student Services.

She began working at SCC as an administrative assistant in Student Services, a job she held from July 2016 to February 2017. Then, she was promoted to Early College Liaison in February 2017 and worked in that role until her last promotion to her current position. In 2018, she received the “Excellence in Service to Students” Award from SCC’s chapter of National Society of Leadership and Success.

Her team helps students register for classes and decide on career paths at SCC. She reminds students: “Go see your advisors often - we are here to help you!”

In July 2019, Recknor was awarded a scholarship to attend the Kellogg Institute at Appalachian State University where she studied integration of student support services, working with diverse student populations, and technology in the 21st century classroom.

More recently, she was elected to the leadership position of High School to College Chair within the National Academic Advising Association known as NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising.

Before coming to SCC, Recknor worked at the University of Kentucky’s School of Music as an administrative assistant for 3.5 years.

“My husband was offered a promotion through his company, PGW Glassworks, now Vitro, to move to Elkin. I started searching for jobs in higher education because of my previous experience at UK and applied to SCC,” Recknor said. “When I arrived for my interview, I fell in love with the campus and wrote to a former co-worker how much I wanted the position. Funny enough, I originally declined the job offer because I did not think I could handle the hours with my four horses at home. Thankfully, Sabrina Terry made it work for me, and here we are.”

In 2019, Recknor earned a master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Community College and University Leadership from Appalachian State University. She is also working on the following credential – Education Specialist, Higher Education Administration, Community College and University Leadership – from Appalachian State University with an anticipated completion of May 2021.

She is also completing work toward a graduate certificate in International Leadership from Appalachian State University with an anticipated completion of May 2021.

“I am passionate about underrepresented student success and hope to write my dissertation on this subject around the early college once I get into and choose an Ed.D. program to start in 2021,” Recknor said.

Recknor and her husband live in the rural community of State Road.

“I grew up in a small town in New York called South Salem where my parents still reside. My husband and I met at UK, in the marching band, where he played trombone, and I was a senior assistant. We got married in New Canaan, Conn., in 2011 and moved to N.C. from Kentucky in 2015. We have four cats, a dog, and four horses.”

Recknor has settled into her life in North Carolina and her leadership role at SCC.

“My favorite memory was the first graduation I attended. The feeling of pride for the early college students I had only worked with for a few months is unexplainable,” she said.

“The faculty and staff at SCC are the most supportive, welcoming, and caring group of people I have had the pleasure to be around. If you come to SCC, you will be part of a large family that cares about your success and will do everything in their power to see you through. In fact, you will likely find people who will be there for you for many years to come,” she added.
