Melissa Recknor is Surry Community College’s Director of Advising and
Student Success, leading a team of five success advisors and one
counselor in Student Services.
She began working at SCC as an
administrative assistant in Student Services, a job she held from July
2016 to February 2017. Then, she was promoted to Early College Liaison
in February 2017 and worked in that role until her last promotion to her
current position. In 2018, she received the “Excellence in Service to
Students” Award from SCC’s chapter of National Society of Leadership and

on career paths at SCC. She reminds students: “Go see your advisors
often - we are here to help you!”
In July 2019, Recknor was
awarded a scholarship to attend the Kellogg Institute at Appalachian
State University where she studied integration of student support
services, working with diverse student populations, and technology in
the 21st century classroom.
More recently, she was elected to the
leadership position of High School to College Chair within the National
Academic Advising Association known as NACADA: The Global Community for
Before coming to SCC, Recknor
worked at the University of Kentucky’s School of Music as an
administrative assistant for 3.5 years.
“My husband was offered a
promotion through his company, PGW Glassworks, now Vitro, to move to
Elkin. I started searching for jobs in higher education because of my
previous experience at UK and applied to SCC,” Recknor said. “When I
arrived for my interview, I fell in love with the campus and wrote to a
former co-worker how much I wanted the position. Funny enough, I
originally declined the job offer because I did not think I could handle
the hours with my four horses at home. Thankfully, Sabrina Terry made
it work for me, and here we are.”
In 2019, Recknor earned a
master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Community College
and University Leadership from Appalachian State University. She is also
working on the following credential – Education Specialist, Higher
Education Administration, Community College and University Leadership –
from Appalachian State University with an anticipated completion of May

International Leadership from Appalachian State University with an
anticipated completion of May 2021.
“I am passionate about
underrepresented student success and hope to write my dissertation on
this subject around the early college once I get into and choose an
Ed.D. program to start in 2021,” Recknor said.
Recknor and her husband live in the rural community of State Road.
grew up in a small town in New York called South Salem where my parents
still reside. My husband and I met at UK, in the marching band, where
he played trombone, and I was a senior assistant. We got married in New
Canaan, Conn., in 2011 and moved to N.C. from Kentucky in 2015. We have
four cats, a dog, and four horses.”
Recknor has settled into her life in North Carolina and her leadership role at SCC.

pride for the early college students I had only worked with for a few
months is unexplainable,” she said.
“The faculty and staff at SCC
