Learn About the Geology of NC in Class Starting in March at The Pilot Center


Learn about the unique geology of North Carolina in “A Journey Through Time from Mountains to Shore: A Two-Part Course ” offered through Surry Community College. The class will meet on Tuesdays, March 4 through April 30 from 9 a.m. to noon at The Pilot Center, 612 East Main Street, Pilot Mountain.

For Basic Geology, the class will discuss the formation of the mountains around in the local area and visit Pilot Mountain. Participants will learn about the three main rock types – igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary, how to recognize them, and what major geologic processes produce them. The class will also visit NC Granite Corp.

Students will discuss various landforms, such as water flow at the surface (river systems) as well as underground, shore development, and ice (glaciers). They will discuss how to understand those lines on topographic maps and visit the Yadkin River. The ultimate goal is the appreciation for the beauty and intricacies of our planet's history, geologic processes, and landforms, in addition to an appreciation of the relationships of natural processes and human activities.
