Industrial Career Classes Begin in May at SCC

Surry Community has several Industrial Career classes starting in May.

Electrical Contractor Renewal (8 hours) or (4 hours) will be offered Tuesday, May 7 and Thursday, May 9 from 6 to 10 p.m. in Room J-103, Surry Community College, 630 S. Main Street, Dobson. North Carolina requires professional tradesmen to obtain yearly Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Surry Community College offers CEUs for electricians. These classes are offered upon approval of the appropriate licensing board for CEUs toward license renewal and are not sponsored by the boards. CFC Freon Certification will be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays, May 20 through June 5 from 6 to 10 p.m. in Room K-115, Surry Community College, 630 S. Main Street, Dobson. This 12-hour course is designed to be a training course for HVAC technical personnel to assist in meeting EPA-mandated requirements related to Air Quality Standards. It will prepare students for the CFC Freon Certification examination which will be given on the last day of class for an additional test fee of $40. Pre-registration and pre-payment are required. General Contractor's Prep Class will be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays, May 20 through July 17 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Mount Airy Public Schools Central Office, 351 Riverside Drive, Mount Airy. This course will prepare experienced students for the General Contractor's Residential licensing exam with a detailed review of the N.C. Residential Building Code for one- and two-family dwellings. Emphasis will be placed on the types of questions found in the blueprint section of the residential building exam given by the N.C. Licensing Board for General Contractors, laws and regulations applicable to general contractors and the N.C. Accessibility Code. Pre-registration and pre-payment are required. Cost is $127. Welding: Basic (Afternoon and Evening) will be held on Monday afternoons, May 20 through Aug. 5 from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. and on Wednesday evenings, May 22 through July 31 from 5 to 9 p.m. Both classes will take place in Room S-116, Surry Community College, 630 S. Main Street, Dobson. This fast-paced welding course will prepare students for entry-level SMAW (Stick) and GMAW (MIG) welding employment. In addition to welding safety, this course covers flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead welding positions. Emphasis will be placed on groove and fillet welds on carbon steel plate. Students will learn welding machine set up, welding electrodes, and proper welding techniques and will be prepared for welder qualification welding tests. Students can choose to enroll in the day course or the evening course. Additional costs include books for $60 in addition to gloves, pliers, and vise grips. Welding: GMAW MIG Plate will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, May 20 through July 17 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Room S-116, Surry Community College, 630 S. Main Street, Dobson. The course is ideal for anyone looking to learn TIG welding, which is the gas tungsten arc welding process, or those looking to improve upon their TIG welding skills. Topics include correct selection of tungsten, polarity, gas and proper filler rod with emphasis placed on safety, equipment setup, and welding techniques. Upon completion, students should be able to perform GTAW fillet and groove welds with various electrodes and filler materials. This class will also focus on welding safety and electric and gas drive power sources. Studies will include filler metal selection and shielding gases used for the MIG Gas Metal Arc Welding process. Welding will be performed on mild steel in the flat, horizontal, and vertical positions. Pre-registration and pre-payment are required. Cost is $183, and supply fee is $15. Metalworking: Machining & TIG Welding will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 21 through Aug. 1 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at The Yadkin Center, 1001 College Drive, Yadkinville. This course introduces machining operations as they relate to the metalworking industry. Topics include machine shop safety, measuring tools, milling machines, bench grinders, and layout instruments. Emphasis is placed on setup and operation of machine tools. This course is also ideal for anyone looking to learn TIG welding, which is the gas tungsten arc welding process, or those looking to improve upon their TIG welding skills. Topics include correct selection of tungsten, polarity, gas and proper filler rod with emphasis placed on safety, equipment setup, and welding techniques.
