Honor Society Hosts Donation Drive for Local Children’s Center

In May, Surry Community College’s chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society partnered with Rock Hill Baptist Church of Ararat, N.C., to donate needed items to the Children’s Center of Northwest North Carolina.

Items donated included fleece blankets, hygiene items, cleaning supplies, and more. The SCC PTK Honor Society collected seven boxes of donations from students on campus. In addition, the congregation of the Rock Hill Baptist Church and local resident, Renee Hauser contributed a total of $150 which was used to purchase more items. The PTK Honor Society simultaneously collected 32 children’s books for local Little Free Libraries, in partnership with the James Hunter Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the Revolution.

The donation drive was suggested by PTK Chapter President, Sydney Presa who commented, “This was one of the most rewarding experiences for our chapter. Everyone was thrilled to do this drive and put together all the items for transport to the center. We hope to do more drives like this in the future for our community.”

Sydney Presa and Incoming Chapter President, Ellie Edwards delivered the donations for the Children’s Center during the last week of classes for spring semester. Edwards was pleased with the results.

"Our efforts in the Children's Center donation drive were successful. It's really nice to know that our contribution has made a difference and has positively impacted their lives,” she said.

“The PTK Honor Society wants to thank everyone who donated to the drive. Without those donations, we would not be able to have the impact we have on our community,” said Dr. Kathleen Fowler, PTK Co-Advisor.

Since 1998, the Children’s Center has been a beacon for nurturing children and families through proactive, instructive support and encouragement. They provide family, youth, and behavioral health services as well as a wide range of programs that support the prevention, intervention and treatment of child abuse. In addition, the Children’s Center provides services for neglected and at-risk youth.

For more than a century, the members of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution have dedicated themselves to historical preservation, promotion of education, and encouragement of patriotic endeavor. Most of DAR's volunteer work is accomplished by the grassroots efforts of chapters on the local level which focus on the mission areas of DAR by encouraging members to become involved in these initiatives in their local communities.
