Federal Work Study Program Helps Students Succeed

Date:

Federal Work Study provides job opportunities for students at Surry Community College.

"The Federal Work Study program has allowed me to be a tutor in the Academic Support Center on the Dobson campus. I am able to earn money, gain experience, and serve SCC students and staff through the program, ” said Zachary Chandler.

Donald Fowler, Assistant Director of Surry Community College's Academic Support Center, is his supervisor.

“Zachary is an excellent employee. He is conscientious about his duties, very knowledgeable about the subjects he tutors; he is also self-motivated, and is always willing to help. I appreciate his willingness to go the extra mile for the Academic Support Center. ”

Zachary tutors in the following subjects: Precalculus, Trigonometry, Statistics, Chemistry, Biology, and Micro-Economics. He is in the Associate in Science college transfer program at Surry. He plans to pursue a bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering and then apply to medical school. He currently serves as Surry Community College's Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society president.

Zachary was in the Army for six years and attained the rank of staff sergeant.

Coordinator of Veteran's Affairs Tammy Fletcher said, “Zachary is a trustworthy, reliable, intelligent person with strong values and respect for others and will make a huge difference in the world around him. ”

Zachary resides in Mount Airy and graduated from Patrick County High School in 2010.

Federal Work Study is a federally funded program designed to provide part-time employment to students who demonstrate financial need. The Financial Aid office in Student Services oversees the hiring process and places students in jobs related to their program of study. Students earn monthly wages in addition to their financial aid monies. Doing a Federal Work Study does not reduce other types of financial aid.

Students interested in Federal Work Study opportunities must complete a FAFSA https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa and Federal Work Study Job application at https://jobs.surry.edu/. For questions, contact Kendra Simmons Myers, Financial Aid Specialist, at simmonsk@surry.edu or (336) 386-3465.
