Surry Community College will hold a Global Camp July 15 through July 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Surry Community College, 630 S. Main St., Dobson. Students should be rising third through sixth graders. Cost is $35.
Campers will take a trip around the world in four days. They will explore the language, culture, and customs of these countries.
The camp will be directed by Sarah Wright, SCC English Instructor and Faculty Advisor for Scholars of Global Distinction. Participants will receive a special “passport ” to collect stamps as they “travel ” to the various countries during the camp.
Several guest speakers will visit who are from, or who have spent significant time in various countries, and will share their experiences. Campers can expect to learn about Italy, Spain, Germany, Mexico, and several other countries. Participants will also complete craft projects they can take home, and play games unique to the countries they are learning about.
“We expect the camp to be an educational and fun experience for all campers, ” Wright says. “We are extremely excited to offer this opportunity to local students. ”
Students in the college's Scholars of Global Distinction program will also be on hand to guide the young explorers. The Scholars of Global Distinction is a program open to all students at Surry Community College. Scholars complete 15 credits of globally intensive courses, attend eight “passport ” events, complete an immersion program, and deliver a capstone presentation. Participation in the program fosters increased global awareness and skills to compete in the globally diverse world.
