COVID-19: Lifting Restrictions

Elijah and Mindy Bryant - Alumni Spotlight

Date:

They say you never know where you’ll meet the love of your life, but could it happen at Surry Community College? For Elijah and Mindy Bryant, that’s exactly what happened.

“We first met in Ms. Sarah Wright’s English 111 class. We sat on the same row but didn’t get a chance to speak very often,” explains Elijah. “As the course continued, we both became part of the same friend group and would hang out after class. The next semester, we both signed up for Ms. Wright’s 112 class without realizing it. We also had other classes together like Public Speaking and New Testament during our second semester. Along with performing in the SCC Talent Show together, we were also officers in the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. We became very close and started talking,” Elijah continues.

“We knew what we had in our relationship was one of a kind,” says Mindy.

Elijah grew up in Lowgap and graduated from North Surry High School in 2015. He then obtained his Associate in Arts from Surry Community College before taking advantage of the partnership SCC has with Lees-McRae College where he received a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education in 2019.

“I absolutely loved my time at Surry!” says Bryant. “I was able to serve as an Ambassador and was a leader in two honors societies.”

Mindy Benfield Bryant graduated from Mount Airy High School in 2015 and received an Associate in Arts at SCC. She then transferred to Appalachian State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and minored in Social Work in 2019.

“Two months after graduation, we got married,” says Elijah. “Ms. Wright even came to the wedding.”

“We are so thankful that we attended Surry Community College! We recommend that everyone go there,” says Mindy. “Surry is a great decision because of the small class sizes, local networking, diverse areas of study, and reasonable tuition prices. It allowed us to have minimal student loans since we were starting our marriage journey.”

Mindy worked at Surry County Department of Social Services as a foster care social worker after graduation from ASU. In February of 2020, she began working at Chick-fil-A Mount Airy as a marketing assistant. She helps with marketing and catering.

Elijah taught kindergarten at Cedar Ridge Elementary 2019 to 2020 after graduating from Lees-McRae. He currently teaches kindergarten at Dobson Elementary.

It just goes to show you that more than the love of learning can happen at SCC. Happy Valentine’s Day!
