Surry Community College alumni Courtney Jackson is the new Surry Early College High School Liaison. She has been on the job for two months and also serves as the Student Government Association Advisor in her new role. Previously, she worked as an administrative assistant and instructor in English Language Acquisitions, formerly known as English as a Second Language, and High School Equivalency programs. Additionally, she was a Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment Systems (CASAS) testing team member. Jackson is also employed as an adjunct psychology instructor at Surry.
As a 2015 North Surry High School graduate, Jackson earned an Associate in Arts from Surry Community College in 2017 and transferred to Lees-McRae College where she received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 2018. She continued her education and earned a Master of Science in Psychology with a specialization in Educational Psychology in 2019 from Capella University. She is now a doctoral candidate in Capella’s Educational Psychology program.
“After attending Surry Community College as a Career & College Promise, dually enrolled high school student, and as a traditional student, I knew I wanted to come back and work here in order to serve my community,” Jackson said. “As a student, I learned so much from all staff and faculty that made me the person I am today. I love the community that SCC has developed.”
She credits SCC with her educational success.
“When I was working with my college advisor as a student, I knew I wanted to transfer to Lees-McRae's cohort program. My advisors helped me schedule my remaining SCC classes in order to begin my B.S. degree early. This helped me get a head start on my education and reach new heights in my professional and academic life. Without the help of SCC, I would not be where I am today,” she said.
As the Surry Early College High School Liaison, Jackson is able to help students grow in their various career paths.
“I am so proud that I am able to help students successfully continue their studies on their right academic track,” she said.
As a SCC alumni and employee, Jackson can give a powerful recommendation to others who are thinking about continuing their education at Surry.
“I recommend Surry Community College to every single person. Surry Community College can help people in every stage of life. Whether you're in high school or want to come back to college as an adult to retool your skills, Surry Community College can give you the best of both worlds and help you achieve your academic goals. Our faculty and staff are here to work with you and to ensure that your experience is amazing. Most of us have sat in the same classrooms and have experienced the same things current students are experiencing. We understand how SCC works and how we can make it work for you.”
She offers the following advice to students.
“I think that all students should realize that each journey starts with one step. Sometimes, it can be easy to become overwhelmed when thinking about long semesters of work. I want each student to know that they are capable of anything they may set their mind to. We have a team that can help with almost any problems, concerns, or questions that students may have regarding their educational journey. Don't forget to utilize SCC's resources because we are here to help you cross the finish line, one step at a time,” Jackson said.
She and her husband Seth reside in Mount Airy. He graduated from SCC with an associate degree in Computer Information Technology. He works at SCC as the Lead Computer Technician.
