Learn how to get a head start on your bachelor's degree at Surry! Surry Community College will be hosting a College Transfer Open House on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at the Yadkin Center and on Monday, April 29, 2019, on the Dobson campus from 4 to 7 p.m. Enter a $250 scholarship drawing and get help with college application and financial aid at the event. Attend an information session to learn more about your options.
Surry Community College is a great place to start your four-year degree. These open houses are a way for students and their families to explore educational opportunities. Adults who are looking to further their education should attend these events. Additionally, high school students interested in Career & College Promise tuition-free, dual enrollment opportunities for their junior and senior years are encouraged to attend along with students who will be graduating from high school this year.
Research from SCC's Student Services office has shown that attending Surry for two years instead of going straight to a four-year college or university will save a student an average of $28,000. Plus, students who transfer from a community college outperform students who go straight to a four-year school. Surry is evaluated on how well transfer students do after the transition to a university, and historically SCC has outperformed other community colleges in the state.
Students benefit by being able to explore different fields of study at a lower tuition cost than that of a four-year college, while they also prepare themselves academically for the rigorous university workload. Plus, they save money by living at home while attending class at Surry.
College Transfer Students have the option to choose an Associate in Science, Associate in Arts or an Associate in Fine Arts in Visual Arts. All these programs are offered at the Dobson campus, and the Associate in Arts degree has been offered at The Yadkin Center in Yadkinville since Fall 2016. The Associate in Arts degree is also offered online.

College Transfer Info Sessions
Three 30-minute College Transfer Info Sessions will be offered each night at 4 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. along with interactive displays. The info sessions will cover the differences between an Associate in Arts, Associate in Science and an Associate in Fine Arts in Visual Arts degrees.
The Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) between the community colleges and the university system will be explained along with UGETC (Universal General Education Transfer Component) classes. The CAA makes it easy to transfer from a NC community college to state university. The majority of private institutions in North Carolina also recognize these credits. The CAA created a category of transferable courses called UGETC courses. The acronym is easy to remember in that “if you get a C ” in each UGETC course, it is guaranteed to transfer to the UNC System as a general education course.
Rising high school juniors and seniors will benefit from the event by learning more about the Career & College Promise tuition-free, dual enrollment agreement during the sessions.
Student Services staff will provide admissions and financial aid information as well. Students will have the ability to go ahead and apply to Surry and complete a financial aid application at the event with Surry counselors there to help.
