College Faculty and Staff Presented Awards

Six Surry Community College employees were presented awards by President Dr. David Shockley during the Fall Semester 2021 Update Meeting for full-time faculty and staff. The presentation took place on Aug. 27, in the SCC Gymnasium on the Dobson campus.

Dr. Susan Worth, Division Chair - Mathematics, was awarded the Surry Community College 2021-2022 Excellence in Teaching Award. The Excellence in Teaching Award provides recognition for dedication to the mission and goals of Surry Community College and meritorious performance in the classroom. Worth has been working for Surry Community College for 35 years. She and her department faculty actively pursue professional development opportunities, participate in regional and state meetings and organizations, and sponsor an active Math Club.

“I am so very proud of Dr. Susan Worth for being selected as the Surry Community College 2021-2022 Excellence in Teaching Award,” said SCC President Dr. David Shockley. “Susan is an amazing math instructor who has served admirably as a leader throughout her tenure at the college. We are truly blessed by her service to all our stakeholders.”

The 2021-2022 President’s Award for Meritorious Teaching was given to Dr. Darin Cozzens, Division Chair – English, Communication & Humanities, and Amber Reid, Physical Education Instructor.

Rhonda Hazelwood, the Director of Training and User Support, received the Surry Community College 2021-2022 Distinguished Staff Award. The Distinguished Staff Award provides recognition for dedication to the mission and goals of Surry Community College and provides evidence of meritorious performance. Hazelwood, an alumnus of Surry Community College, received two degrees in two years. She got her start as an employee by working as a co-op student, before receiving a part-time position after graduation. Shortly after, she moved into a full-time position and has now been working for the college for 21 years. She was also honored for this award in 2016-2017.

“It was an honor to present Ms. Rhonda Hazelwood the Surry Community College 2021-2022 Distinguished Staff Award,” said Shockley. “Rhonda’s tenure as a student, part-time employee, and current full-time director at the college is a testimony of the persistent pursuit of excellence. Rhonda serves as an inspiration for our students and employees.”

The 2021-2022 President’s Award for Meritorious Service was presented to Sam Brim, Director of Business and Industry Services, and Caleb Gilley, who serves as Student Success Advisor and Head Volleyball Coach.

Rhonda Hazelwood and Dr. Susan Worth received a plaque along with a financial award from the Surry Community College Foundation. All other award recipients were also given a plaque and a smaller monetary gift.
