COVID-19 Response: Spring 2021 Semester Guidelines.

Attention: Fall 2020 SCC Students

Date:

Important Message from Sabrina Terry, Dean of Student Services

Schedule Changes:

As you are probably already aware, Surry Community College plans to hold

seated, hybrid, and online classes this fall. The semester will begin

as scheduled on Monday, August 17.

Over the past couple of weeks, we have made several changes to courses

to allow for social distancing. For many classes that were scheduled to

be on campus two days, this means that half of the students will come to

campus one of those days and the other half will come to campus on the

other day. For example, if you were registered for an ENG 111 class that

was scheduled for MW, you may now only be scheduled to attend the

Monday seated class while the other half of the class attends the

Wednesday seated class.

Blended/hybrid courses will meet one or two days per week depending on

the number of contact hours for the course. The remainder of the course

will be held in synchronous, virtual sessions or asynchronously online.

Please email your instructor for information on how the course will be

structured and the expectations for online learning.

Most SCC online classes are designed so that students can access

information around their work and home schedules; however, some sections

have synchronous ("live" online at a designated time) components.

Please note any designated meeting times for online (I sections). All

sessions will be recorded in case students need to view synchronous

sessions at a later time.

We encourage all students to check their Self-Service account to review

their updated schedules. Instructions to do so have been sent to your

student email account. Also, keep in mind that while the vast majority

of schedule changes have been made, there will be a few additional

changes this week, so we recommend that you check your schedule again

the weekend prior to classes beginning. Pay close attention to the

building and room numbers of your course.

Online Orientation

A link to SCC’s Online Orientation will be available to new students on

Monday, August 10. This link will be sent via email and text message on

Monday prior to 6 p.m. All new students should complete the New Student

Orientation module before the beginning of the fall semester.

Bookstore

On Monday, August 10, students may begin charging their financial aid in

the Bookstore. Students may order their books online and have them

shipped, or pick them up in the Bookstore. Or, you may bring a copy of

your schedule to the Bookstore, located in the “C” building on the main

campus in Dobson.

Knight Chat

Join me on Facebook Live on Tuesday, August 11 at 7 p.m. or Friday,

August 14 at noon to get all of your Fall 2020 semester questions

answered. I hope to see you there! Also, if you are a high school

student, you are still invited to join me for the Knight Chat, but check

your email for a Q&A session that is scheduled specifically for

your high school that will be hosted by your SCC assigned Success

Advisor. These sessions are designed for both parents and students.

If you have any questions, contact Student Services at (336) 386-3264 or studentservices@surry.edu.
