Radar Operator Recertification is a program offered under the rules and regulations of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and requires 100% attendance of the minimal instructional hours. This class is for those who are Radar certified or those who are within their 12 months “grace” period. Each individual participant must bring a current SMI Operator Manual for their area of certification and all Supplements (currently January 2022) or an updated edition will be furnished and the department billed and a vehicle equipped with a RADAR unit in which they are seeking certification. Officers who are field testing on units equipped with front and rear antenna must be prepared to test on the full operation of the unit.
Each individual must email a copy of their current certification to mchonej@surry.edu or bring a copy for filing the first day of class.

The Basic Law Enforcement Training Day Course starts in January and June every year. For classes that start in January, the application process opens October 1 of each year. For classes that start in May and June, the application process opens on March 1 of each year.

There will be approximately 12 extended hours and/or night sessions to accommodate State mandated training requirements.
This course will provide police supervisors at all levels and rank with an overview of the legal liability they face as supervisors. The course will cover NC and Federal law and legal theories used against police supervisors and their agencies. Concepts such as gross negligence, intentional torts, deliberate indifference, and 42 USC Sec. 1983 will be covered. The instructor will offer practical techniques and tips that supervisors can utilize to help minimise their risk, and the risks against their respective agencies. Course is also useful and appropriate for patrol officers/detectives wanting to learn more about liability.
This course is designed for all law enforcement personnel acting in the role of School Resource Officer, as well as his or her supervisor.
Topics:
The objectives of the course are to teach students to:- Draft a valid search warrant.- Lawfully execute a search warrant.- Lawfully conduct warrantless searches.- Conduct interviews lawfully during an investigative detention or arrest situation.- Apply noncustodial interview procedures to obtain lawful confessions.- Conduct nontestimonial and eyewitness identification procedures in accordance with applicable law.- Conduct a valid investigative stop and frisk and a lawful arrest, using proper basis, parameters and use of force.- Identify the steps an officer may take to defend against a liability action.
