Workforce Certificate, On Campus
The Detention Officer Certification Course is a 174 hour course for any individual that is seeking employment and/or certification as a detention officer at a local confinement facility, county jail, or regional confinement facility. The course is designed to provide the student with the necessary knowledge and essential skills to function as an entry level detention officer.
The certification exam will be administered on the last day of class. This course is governed by the North Carolina Sheriff's Education and Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
Completion of this courses and successful completion of the State comprehensive exam will allow a student to be employed in County detention facilities in the State of North Carolina.
Instructional Format: Face-to-face instruction will include lecture, discussion, practical and lab.
The Commission mandated 174-hour course takes approximately 5 weeks to complete and concludes with a comprehensive written exam. Upon successful completion of the course, the new detention officer will be eligible to be certified as a detention officer in North Carolina Applicants for this course must be employed and sponsored by a Sheriff's Office. Students must complete the pre-application packet available at their agency. Agencies need to provide the most current DOCC outlines (may be purchased at NCJA bookstore or Surry Community College's Bookstore prior to class) To enroll please contact your agency's training officer or detention supervisor.

This certification-related Telecommunicator Course is designed to meet the training guidelines mandated by the North Carolina Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commission. Trainees must successfully pass a state-administered exam as well as demonstrate competency in all skill areas in order to be eligible for certification. Contact the NC Department of Justice for course standards.
Students must provide a current Sheriff’s F-1 (Medical History), Sheriff’s F-2 (Physical Exam), proof of current employment with law enforcement or emergency communications center, and must be sponsored by a law enforcement agency.

Cost: $183 plus associated books, tools, and supplies
Virginia residents pay the same tuition rate as in-state students.
