English Language Acquisitions (ELA)

The ELA classes, formerly ESL, provide a means for speakers of other languages to attend classes to learn English communication skills as well as American customs and history.

Orientation will be held at each of the four class sites. *Cost: Free

Orientation

An orientation is required for all new ELA students and students returning after 90 days. This will be scheduled in one, four-hour day or night session. The orientation will be held in Room H-277 on Surry’s campus at 630 S. Main St., Dobson on the following dates and times:

Pronunciation

The ELA Pronunciation class helps improve pronunciation and communication skills for the students studying English Language Acquisitions (ELA). It is offered to students who have achieved the level of Low-Intermediate according to the placement test administered to them.

Citizenship

The purpose of this class is to increase students' knowledge of civics in the United States that will help them become active and informed parents, workers, and community members. It will include a contextualized instruction on the rights and responsibilities of a citizen, U.S history, and naturalization procedures.
