Adult Basic Education (ABE)

The ABE program of instruction is designed for adults who already have a high school diploma but need to improve their reading, writing, math and employability skills to function more effectively in society, on a job or in the family.

We also offer ABE classes designed specifically for adults with developmental disabilities and traumatic brain injuries. The focus of these classes is to improve the individual’s independence by acquiring necessary basic life skills from math and reading to job development. Students also gain appropriate communication and socialization skills and full access to a computer lab.

Class Options:

  • Creating Successful Learners in Mount Airy – received NADO (National Association of Developmental Organizations) award.
  • DREAM (Dedication-Responsibility-Education-Attitude-Motivation) Programs at LIFESPAN in Dobson and New Horizons Adult Day Services in Yadkinville. Students do not have to be a client of these agencies in order to enroll in classes.

For more information on ABE classes for those with development disabilities or brain trauma, contact Nicole Shores at (336) 386-3441 or shoresrn@surry.edu.

Classes are offered at our five learning centers. *Cost: Free.

All new students must meet with the ABE Coordinator to obtain a literacy assessment. The ABE Coordinator will then refer the student to the appropriate class at their educational functioning level based on their reading assessment results. Class availability, location, travel, etc. will be considered in placing the student. Students in the program will be retested at least once per year to capture any increase in test scores.
