Career and College Promise (Dual Enrollment)

Earn College Credits & Get a Jump Start on Your College Career

Still in high school but ready for college courses? At SCC, you can earn college credits and get a jump start on your college career. Career and College Promise (CCP) is a dual enrollment program that offers NC high school students an affordable way to begin their college studies by earning college credits tuition free.

Surry Community College's CCP program offers two options or “pathways” for students in high school. Students should select a pathway and then take only the courses within that pathway, as required by the program legislation. Eligible students may enroll in a maximum of two pathways. With approval from their high school principal or designee and the College's Chief Academic Officer, students may concurrently enroll in either one College Transfer Pathway and one Career Technical Education (CTE) pathway or two CTE pathways. Concurrent enrollment in two College Transfer Pathways is not permitted.

Any junior or senior at any North Carolina homeschool with a valid number from the North Carolina Department of Non-Public Instruction (NCDNPI) may participate in Career and College Promise, as long as they meet the other eligibility requirements.

See the Career and College Promise booklet for programs that are approved for high school students.

See your high school guidance counselor to determine your eligibility.

Career and College Promise Benefits

The purpose of Career and College Promise (CCP) is to offer structured opportunities for qualified high school students to dually enroll in community college courses that lead to a certificate, diploma, or degree, as well as provide entry-level jobs skills – tuition-free. CCP is a partnership between NC public schools and the NC Community College System. Dual enrollment courses through CCP are tuition-free but there may be additional local fees. If you want to enroll in a college course, work with your high school counselor to determine eligibility.

Benefits of CCP

  • Free tuition
  • Engage in interests to help achieve educational and career goals
  • College classes, credentials, and certifications while in high school
  • Reduce the cost of a college credential
  • Dual credit- college courses can be used to fulfill some high school graduation requirements

High School versus College Classes

  • CCP courses are college classes, which means that they have the rigor, intensity, and pace of college classes. You must be self-directed.
  • You will be held to the same attendance, academic requirements, and honor code as traditional college students.
  • Classroom accommodations for learning differences may be different in college courses.
  • You may have fewer assignments that carry more weight in the final grade. You may not have opportunities to make-up work, turn assignments in late, or complete extra credit. Penalties for late or missing assignments are often different than in high school.
  • Your course syllabus will give you all the information you need to plan ahead. Pay close attention to the syllabus.
  • CCP courses may require travel to a college campus in the morning or late at night. You could potentially have to spend time beyond normal school hours. Check on the hours to make sure that works for you and your family

CCP versus Early College

  • CCP - designed for students who are currently enrolled in a traditional high school, generally juniors and seniors.
  • Early College - located on the campus of a university or community college, where students simultaneously work toward completion of both the high school diploma and an associate's degree, transferrable credit or certificate. Students must apply as 8th graders to enter the early college program as freshmen in high school.

FERPA

College employees are not able to discuss your student's college life with you. Due to privacy laws, once a student enrolls in college, we can only share their educational information directly with them. Your student can provide written consent for us to discuss matters with you but this does not include grade reports, class schedule releases, and more. You can speak with your high school counselor or principal regarding grade or schedule concerns.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act or “FERPA” (Public Law 93-380) was signed into federal law in 1974. This law protects the privacy of student records and gives students the right to review their education records, seek to amend inaccurate information in their records, and provide consent for the disclosure of their records.

For more information about students records, please contact Student Services located on the first floor in the A Building, or at (336) 386-8121.

Homeschool Information

Currently enrolled North Carolina high school students who meet the eligibility criteria for their chosen pathway can participate in CCP, including home school students and private school students. Students who have already graduated from high school are not eligible. To be eligible, juniors and seniors must meet specific requirements. Contact Carly Jordan, jordancj@surry.edu for more information.
