Surry CC Offering New Class for Jazz Fans
Surry Community College is offering a new Introduction to Jazz course online this summer.
With greats like Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis and Ella Fitzgerald, jazz music has been a popular genre since its beginning in the United States. Today it is a genre notable not only for its strong, prominent meter and syncopated rhythmic patterns but for its heavy influence on current hip-hop and pop hits.
Surry’s Introduction to Jazz course will delve deep into the origins and musical components of jazz and the contributions of its significant innovators and major artists. Emphasis is placed on the development of discriminating listening habits, as well as the investigation of the styles and structural forms of the jazz idiom. Students will listen to recordings, watch performances and explore various jazz styles through websites and online archives. Furthermore, the course will explore the cultural significance of jazz music in the United States. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate skills in listening and understanding this form of American music.
The course will begin May 22 and can be completed entirely online. Summer class registration begins March 27 for current students and April 3 for new students. For additional information and registration, contact Student Services at (336) 386-3264.
