Find Your Future In Nursing

Posted: Mar 29, 2016

Students who want to become nurses will be assisted by the generosity of Vannie Allred Rouse who bequeathed $400,000 to support first-year Associate Degree Nursing and Practical Nursing students at Surry Community College. Eligible students need to be graduates of a North Carolina high school and demonstrate financial need.

Rouse died on April 15, 2015, leaving funds to establish the Vannie Allred Rouse Scholarship. Rouse’s donation is SCC’s largest scholarship gift in history.

A child of the depression, Rouse left school early to take care of her invalid mother and to help raise her siblings. She held numerous custodial and customer service jobs at different locations before becoming a manager at the largest drug store in Mount Airy.

Rouse impressed her employers, so she was given more promotions and responsibilities throughout her career. Despite this success, Rouse felt the lack of a formal education had left a void in her life. She was supportive of anyone who was continuing their schooling, an interest which led her to create several perpetual scholarships at schools across the state. Rouse will impact the lives of young people across North Carolina forever through these funds.
