Healthcare Administrative Professional

Surry Community College, in collaboration with Northern Hospital of Surry County and Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital, is now offering a Healthcare Administrative Professional course. The course is designed to give students an opportunity to learn the skills and earn the certificate to work in a physician’s office or patient access area, typically found in the hospital setting.

Students may earn two national certifications:

  1. Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) through the National Healthcareer Association.
  2. Certified Access Associate (CAA) through the North Carolina Association of Healthcare Access Management.

Topics include medical terminology, communication skills, administrative duties and office/financial procedures. Students will be required to complete 12 hours of shadowing experience as part of the course.

Prerequisite: High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Diploma/GED

Preferred: Previous experience working in healthcare and/or customer service.
